Local Directions:
The usual approach to La Roque is via the local turnoff from the D980 at the crossroads between La Roque and St-Michel-d'Euzet. The D980 connects Barjac, Montcluse and Goudargues which lie to the north west of La Roque, to Bagnols-Sur-Cèze and Pont-St-Esprit which lie to the south east and north east respectively. Alternatively, if you are coming from the west and Ales and the D6, there is a back route via the village of Carme and then through vineyards and over the escarpment into La Roque; see 'Directions from Ales and the West' below.
Either way, the main old part of the village is easily visible perched on the side of a steep hill (Click here to view). Drive right into the village along Grand Rue ignoring the sign 'Sauf des Riverains'. Follow the road up and sharply to the left, passing the church on your right and pétanque area on your left. Continue forward bearing just slightly right going up Grand Rue which now becomes a steep cobbled street. Pass the creperie on your right, continue up, and just passed the Romanesque water house on your left (Click here to view - this is looking down the hill you will come up) turn left to park in the area in front of the Mairie. You should now be here. You can park here with no charges or restrictions. Maison La Roque is tucked away up Montée du Chateau which is a stone cobbled street that starts as a normal street exactly opposite the entrance to the Mairie car park but which quickly narrows to a steep path. Keep left and the main entrance to Maison La Roque is a large almost black door on your left after about 25m and a steep climb.

By Train:
Probably the easiest way to travel to La Roque from London, Paris, Amsterdam, Lille, Cologne and other major European cities connecting to the excellent French high speed TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) rail service run by SNCF. There are three train stations within an hour's drive from La Roque:
AvignonTGV on the Marseilles line at about 45 minutes from La Roque, this large modern station is the closest and most convenient with a bar, cafe and newsagent;
Avignon Centre again about 45 minutes from La Roque, this is the old central station used mainly for local slow trains and, for customs reasons, for the direct London-Avignon service;
Nîmes on the Perpignan and Montpellier line at about an hour from La Roque.
Travel by train from London to Avignon is especially simple during the summer, as from July to September Eurostar offer a direct service between London to Avignon Centre. At other times Eurostar runs fast direct services from London and Ashford to Paris and Lille, which connect to the TGV services onward to AvignonTGV or Nîmes. Fast international services from the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are run by Thalys mainly to Paris, again with TGV connections onwards to Avignon and Nîmes. If you travel via Paris you need to transfer from Gard de Nord to Gard de Lyon to connect to TGV services going south, (though this also means that you can spend some time in Paris); if you travel via Lille it's just a simple platform change to connect to the TGV services. You can book tickets in person, online or by phone all the way to Avignon or Nîmes with Eurostar or Rail Europe. If you are travelling from within France, see SNCF (look out for 'iTGV' and 'Prems' for some good deals), and for travel from other European cities see Thalys, Rail Europe and Trentalia.
